About this map.   The red highlights on this map show 77 homes foreclosed in Southern Chase. Gold highlights show 12 additional homes whose owners filed for bankruptcy to avoid foreclosure.

Southern Chase has Cabarrus County's largest concentration of home foreclosures. The neighborhood of 406 homes, north of N.C. 49 near Central Cabarrus High School, was built between 1997 and 2004. The foreclosures started in 2000.

You can see pictures of homes, original sales prices and current tax values by clicking on the map.

The Observer compiled the information from Cabarrus County property records and bankruptcy court records. The map shows only foreclosures involving the original buyers who bought directly from the builder, Beazer Homes USA. It does not show two foreclosures involving subsequent owners. It also excludes more than two dozen bankruptcies that did not directly prevent foreclosure.

A foreclosure means that the owners have fallen behind on mortgage payments, and the home has been seized and sold to repay at least part of the debt.

Owners who fall behind also can file for bankruptcy, and keep the home by participating in a court-ordered debt repayment plan.
